Year 1 - Blwyddyn Un
Our names are Mrs Hayley Keating and Mrs Clare Dunlop and we are the Year One teachers. In our classroom we provide an engaging, creative, fun and safe learning environment where learning is structured and routines are established. Children are encouraged to follow our school motto ‘Be all you can be’. Children are given the opportunity to be challenged and know that they also are responsible for their learning. We are enthusiastic about supporting each and every child in order to achieve their potential in whatever that may be!
Lessons are delivered creatively and interactively using ICT and our fantastic outdoor learning area. We have a very successful team of staff who believe in developing the ‘whole child,’ encouraging independence, perseverance, active and healthy attitudes with a yearn for lifelong learning. The classroom has recently been refurbished, offering large wet and dry area spaces which suit the needs and requirements of a busy, active and hands-on Class One.
Our day to day timetable includes a Literacy and Numeracy lesson every morning and in the afternoon lessons we focus on Welsh, Science, ICT, PE, PSE, RE, Geography, History, Art, Music. We provide a variety of cross curricular lessons linking to our termly topic. There is the opportunity for child initiated learning for 30 minutes every Friday afternoon called Golden Time, this is earned by children by making the right behaviour and learning choices linking to Year One’s Rights and Responsibilities and the Tavernspite Schools Golden Rules.
Our aim is to encourage good habits and we ask the children to read regularly at home and to practise occasional spellings and handwriting. Children have a learning log project to complete once every half term. This is an opportunity to extend in-school learning, and to work with parents at home to create a project which complements our termly topic.
Fruit can be bought in our fruit tuck shop daily. We ask the children to bring 30p per day to pay for their fruit. Milk is also provided for our Year One children, and they have the opportunity to enjoy this drink during the morning break time.
All children need a P.E. kit comprising of shorts, royal blue t-shirt which is available from suppliers, trainers or daps. Our timetabled sessions are on Tuesday and Friday but we ask the children to keep their kits in school as we often run around our running track when the weather is fine. The children take their kits home to be washed at the end of every half term.
We endeavour to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum which builds on the positive experiences gained and enjoyed in the Early Years class.
The school provides a good range of high-quality learning experiences for pupils that enhance their education.
The school's commitment to using the outdoors to improve pupils’ learning and wellbeing is outstanding.
The quality of care, support and guidance is excellent.
